During DECOM we will run our signature PetroCup Tournament, where participants will manage a digital twin of an oil and gas asset using the PetroCup simulator.

PetroCup is an advanced Russian software platform that compresses decades of field-development activity into just a few days. Within this immersive virtual environment, teams design and build surface facilities, perform well surveillance, and implement a wide range of workovers, gaining valuable practical experience across the full field-development life cycle.

The tournament brings together teams from operating companies, oil-field service companies, leading universities, and research centers across Russia and the CIS.

Beyond sharpening geology-and-field-development skills, participation in the tournament lets industry organisations benchmark their performance against other professionals in the market, examine unique methods and strategic approaches to managing field development, exchange best practices, and strengthen collaboration across the oil and gas sector.

PetroCup-DECOM Results

All digital asset twins in PetroCup are modeled based on real oil and gas field and generated by the PolyPlan Server, which simulates:

  • 1 Typical reservoir heterogeneity
  • 2 Common uncertainties in injection and production for each well
  • 3 The behavior of well logging tools closely replicates real field data and includes the typical uncertainties encountered during the processing of open-hole and production logging
  • 4 Cement sheath integrity failure
  • 5 Irregular flow behavior in cross-well intervals
  • 6 The occurrence of spontaneous fracturing in the reservoir
  • 7 Wellbore clogging during production
  • 8 Surface facility limitations on production and injection volumes
  • 9 Drilling of various well types and their completions
  • 10 Field testing results in the area of well testing (PBU, PFO, WFT, IPR)

Throughout the Tournament, teams interpret typical field data and monitor well and reservoir performance. Based on this analysis, they execute informed operational decisions.

These actions include:

  • Drilling of new wells (vertical, vertical fractured, multi-fractured horizontal wells)
  • Water/gas shut-offs
  • Adjusting production targets
  • Adjusting surface facilities
  • Stimulations
  • Perforations, reperforations, and additional shots
  • Hydraulic fracturing
  • Converting wells from producers to injectors or vice versa

Participation in the Tournament is open to teams of 10–12 members, representing either a single organization or formed as joint teams comprising participants from multiple organizations.
