During DECOM two tournaments will be held using the PetroCup interactive simulator:
- 1 Digital Oil and Gas Field Development Management Tournament
- 2 Digital Gas Field Development Design Tournament
PetroCup is an advanced Russian software platform that compresses decades of field-development activity into just a few days. Within this immersive virtual environment, teams design and build surface facilities, perform well surveillance, and implement a wide range of workovers, gaining valuable practical experience across the full field-development life cycle.
The tournament brings together teams from oil and gas operators and service companies, leading universities, and research centers across Russia and the CIS.
Beyond sharpening geology-and-field-development skills, participation in the tournament lets industry organisations benchmark their performance against other professionals in the market, examine unique methods and strategic approaches to managing field development, exchange best practices, and strengthen collaboration across the oil and gas sector.

PetroCup-DECOM Results
All digital twin assets used in PetroCup are modeled based on real oil and gas fields and include typical complications across all disciplines, generated by PolyPlan software.
The platform enables multidisciplinary teams to perform typical field tasks in a convenient online interface without the need for dynamic simulator keywords or other software related to subsurface and surface infrastructure.
PolyPlan models:
- 1 Typical reservoir heterogeneity
- 2 Common uncertainties in injection and production for each well
- 3 Typical behavior of LWD and wireline logging sensors and common interpretation errors
- 4 Cement bond failure and subsequent channelings
- 5 The occurrence of spontaneous fracturing in the reservoir
- 6 Wellbore clogging during production
- 7 Surface facility limitations on production and injection volumes
- 8 Drilling of various well types and their completions
- 9 Field hydrodynamic and geophysical surveys during both well construction and production, including core sampling
Throughout the PetroCup Tournament, teams interpret typical field data — well logs, production surveys, well testing, seismic data, and other sources of information — study well production history, and evaluate reservoir response to various well interventions and stimulation techniques.
During the "Shots", participants make field development management decisions and implement their chosen strategy over a specified number of years:
- Drilling of new wells: vertical, vertical fractured, multi-fractured horizontal wells
- Water/gas shut-offs
- Adjusting production targets
- Adjusting surface facilities
- Stimulations
- Perforations, reperforations, and additional shots
- Hydraulic fracturing
- Converting wells from producers to injectors or vice versa
Participation in the Tournament is open to teams of 10–12 members, representing either a single organization or formed as joint teams comprising participants from multiple organizations.
